Manga: Absolute Boyfriend
Alternate Title: Zettai Kareshi
Author and Artist: Yuu Watase
Categories: Comedy, Romance, Sci-fi, Shoujo
Summary: Rejected way too many times by good-looking (and unattainable) guys, shy Riiko Izawa goes online and signs up for a free trial of a mysterious Nightly Lover "figure." The very next day a cute naked guy is delivered to her door, and he wants to be her boyfriend!
If I were to say anything about Yuu Watase it would be that she is a very talented story writer. Her art has a clean, smooth attractive style that is both appealing in her characters and background art.
If your like me and often pick up a book based on the cover before flipping it over to confirm it meets your "needs" ((and by needs I mean a intellectually stimulating plot - Honest!)) you'll find yourself casually checking over your shoulder least anyone sees you flipping through this:

When I picked this up my cerebral cortex happily overdosed leaving me stunned and awkwardly drooling on the spot. Luckily I still had enough brain cells functioning to "casually" check my surroundings to ensure that I hadn't attracted any unwanted attention. ((Fan girl rule #1 - Look Cool while Drooling))
Of course the first page I stumbled on contained a rather large picture of an unconscious Night, naked and carefully sprawled over a very flustered Riiko.
Very Clever Ms. Watase, very clever!
By inspiring a near fatal nose bleed I was thus forced to buy this said manga! For no other reason then Chapters: You Drool on it you buy it. You Bleed on it you we pack it up in a bio-hazardous bag and consider itself bought policy. Very tricky indeed!
Even though I'm very open minded when it comes to manga ((I'll read anything with a good story)) I do however require exceptional art. Which to put it shallowly I look for an abundance of attractive ((preferably male)) characters. Watase's style is a combination of large beautiful eyes and soft curves and cool stylish hair. She has also mastered the art of 'speaking through expression' in which her pictures speak for themselves.
Story wise it provides all the necessary fundamental requirements of a good Shoujo manga. Some of her character include the pretty but unfortunate heroine that has bad luck in love. A seemingly sympathic best friend, the obnoxios teasing next door neighbour and the extremely good looking, "I'm good at everything" popular hunk. And we can't forget the perfectly timed scarastic 'cosplaying' ((hehehe)) weirdo that claims to be the 'comic relife' of the story.
With that said the story is not short on comical developments that keep things interesting as these characters progress over the period of 6 volumes.
First Volume Summary:
Has Riiko died and gone to heaven? The cute guy turns out to be sweet, smart, a great cook, and lots more. And he looks like a million bucks, which is what he's going to cost Riiko if she doesn't return him in time...
A million dollars dosn't even come close to what the real character is actually worth. As her boyfriend Night takes his job very seriously by defying ((mostly gravity)) defending and resucing Riiko from plenty of sticky situations. He risks everything ((as the perfect man should)) to ensure that Riiko is happy and healthy. As a side note I realize that that kind of relationship is completely impossible ((to this extent)) and unheathly but this is a freaking Shoujo Manga for crying out loud!!
What happens when long time friend discovers he has feelings for Riiko? How does one compete with with an android and win? Add a first 'child hood' crush who will do anything possible to steal Riiko from Night, a job at a Host club, A naughty Nurse and a heart breaking triangle of love to the mix and you'll be clammering for the next volume ASAP.
With all that happens in the first 4 volumes you'd expect the series to continue on it's happy-go-lucky track but by the end of the 5th manga you start to suspect that the dream is....ending. The 6th volume includes a heartbreaking happy ending of epic proportions. After the tears stopped flowing I had to force myself to take a step back and review the powerful deep feelings that it had inspired in me.
To this day volume 6 STILL makes me cry. ((<---- has read like 6 times by now))
Hats off to Yuu Watase for bringing reality into an enjoyable Shoujo manga.
Highly Reccomended!
